C.D.EXPOSURE

EXPOSURE was released in 1998 to great critical acclaim and a debut recording on my own label PIACEVOLE.

I decided to produce a disc with some of my favourite pieces providing a programme of contrasts and  presenting the recorder in a variety of styles and with a variety of instruments.  The result is music from Renaissance to Ragtime highlighting the diversity of the instrument and its music.   I also had a new work written by Andy Meyers which is a welcome addition to the bass repertoire.

The Recercada by Ortiz are divisions on a repeated sequence of chords which produce lively dance rhythms. The Spanish flavour continues with Entr`acte written by a Frenchman.

Original works for recorder and guitar include a Sonata by Francaix-the second movement is a lyrical lament played here on tenor recorder.  New World Dances by the English composer John Golland has a lively ragtime, a mellow blues using finger vibrato, flutter tonguing (and the odd finger click) and a rhythmical Bossa Nova.

Hans Ulrich Staeps as a teacher and composer was an important figure in establishing the recorder as a twentieth century instrument.  His Sonata in E flat has the piano as an equal partner to the recorder merging textures and sounds in four contrasting movements.  Reflections is a new work by Andy Meyers, written for bass recorder and piano.  It is an attractive and welcome addition to the repertoire.

Telemann`s Trio Sonata in B flat Major is unusual in that the harpsichord is an equal soloist with the recorder; the continuo cello line is augmented by a guitar.  The C Major Sonata by the Italian Barsanti combines the intense and emotive with the lively and virtuosic.  This could also be said about the G Minor Sonata attributed to Vivaldi with help from the Frenchman Chedeville from the collection Il Pastor Fido.
